Adding Text (labels) and Images

Adding text to the front page of your Moodle course is a great way to provide clarity and direction for students as they navigate the materials and activities within the course.  As seen below, some simple text (added as labels) can create structure and coherence:

*NOTE: Adding text or images to the summary field (where the date/topic number is listed) is NOT recommended.  Excessive text or images can essentially ‘break’ this field, also causing other errors in the course.  To add any text or images to the front page of your course, use a label.

To add text via a label, follow the steps below:

1.  Turn editing on (upper right-hand corner or in the settings block)

2.  Find the week to which you would like to add text, and click the Add an activity or resource link.

3.  From the Activity and Resource picker, scroll to the bottom and check the button next to “label” and then click “add.”

4.  Enter your desired text in the text editor box.  To reveal more editing tools, click the toolbar toggle button once.  You can alter size, font, color, etc. using the editing tools, much like in Word.

5.  When you have finished editing your text, scroll to the bottom and click “Save and return to course.”  Your label will now appear.  As with any resource, you can move it to the desired location.

Images on the front page can also help make your course look more aesthetically pleasing, but keep in mind that excessively large, or too many, images will increase the length of time it takes for students to load your page and can be distracting.  To add images that are resources (for student learning), please add those as files, explained here.

To add an image to the front page of your course via a label, follow the steps below:

1.  Turn editing on (upper right-hand corner or in the settings block)

2.  Find the week to which you would like to add text, and click the Add an activity or resource link.

3.  From the Activity and Resource picker, scroll to the bottom and check the button next to “label” and then click “add.”

4.  At the label editing page, click the “insert image” button from the editing toolbar.

5.  An insert image window pops open.  If the image is on your computer, select “Find or upload an image…” and then find the image from your computer.  If the image is from the internet, and you have the image url, paste it into the “image url” text line.

6.  Once the image is selected, it will appear in the preview box.  Add a description, then click insert.

7.  The image now appears in the text editing box.  You may need to resize the picture, especially if it is too large.  To do this, click the image once to engage the sizing frame.  Much like adjusting an image in Word, grab a corner and size as needed.

You can continue to add other images or text.  If you need to edit the image again, highlight it and click the insert/edit image button used is step 4.

8.  Once satisfied, scroll to the bottom and click save and return to course.

Your image is now on the front page of the course!  Feel free to move it up/down as needed.
